Pawling & Harnischfeger 30-ton type "AN" bridge crane with a 5-ton type "A" trolley at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair in either the Palace of Electricity or Machinery. The crane is stamped with the text "Pawling & Harnischfeger Builders, Milwaukee, Wis., Main Hoist 60,000 Lbs., Auxiliary 1,000 Lbs., No. 1075." and the banner draped on the crane reads "Pawling & Harnischfeger, Traveling Cranes, Milwaukee, Wis." There are booths from various companies on the floor of the room.

One hundred years and countless achievements have come and gone since Loyola University was chartered in New Orleans in 1912. Since that time, the Jesuit-Catholic university has grown to house five colleges and two professional schools, educating 5,000 students a year with the guidance and support of more than 1,100 faculty and staff. For a century, Loyola has not only contributed to the economic health of the greater New Orleans area, almost $ 164 million last year alone, but it has also produced men and women who serve as catalysts of change in their communities by exemplifying the ethical and values-laden education they received at their alma mater.

Loyolas 17th and current president, the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., believes that creates quite a ripple effect outside Loyolas campus. Loyola Universitys first 100 years were paved with great ambition and outstanding achievements. Today, Loyola is stronger than ever and poised to usher in its next century of impacting the world beyond its classrooms, Wildes said.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, Loyola University New Orleans will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its chartering as a university. The centennial will be observed from April 2012 to May 2013, featuring a number of signature and academic events that celebrate and explore Loyolas rich history. Festivities will begin today, April 10, 2012, with a host of public activities and lectures on campus following throughout the week, finally leading to a major kick-off event on April 14, 2012, the Founders Day Celebration.

In addition, the university recently launched a centennial website to give a nod to its past 100 years, http://www.loyno.edu/2012, which contains personal stories and photos showing the enormous impact a Jesuit education has on its students. The website also features milestones, official events, historical photos, video interviews and Loyolas plan for the future, illustrating how the university was and still is a place of innovation, academic achievement and lasting friendships.

To permanently document Loyolas unique history, the university commissioned the publication of Founded on Faith: A History of Loyola University New Orleans, written by professor of history Bernard Cook, Ph.D. The book, on sale at http://www.loyno.bkstr.com, provides a definitive history of the Jesuits in Louisiana and explores Loyolas impact to the city of New Orleans through a colorful cast of students, alumni, Jesuits, faculty and other characters.

The week leading up to the centennial kick-off offers a host of activities that celebrate Loyolas history and accomplishments, many of which are free and open to the public. Following a competition, thirteen artists were selected to paint life-sized model horses, basing their design on the name of a 2000 Guineas winner.
The 13 horses, which have been painted by artists using the theme of Guineas winners, are part of the project Horse About Newmarket, an initiative organised by Newmarket Town Council and the brainchild of town councillor Joy Uney.
Sixteen smaller horses were painted by local schools, youth organisations and charities
The project has been sponsored by local businesses, Forest Heath District Council and Suffolk County Council with painting materials supplied by the art department of Newmarket store Tindalls.
They were on display at the racecourse the weekend of the QIPCO Guineas Festival.
After that they were moved to locations round the town where they will remain throughout the summer before they are sold to raise money for charity in a silent auction at Tattersalls, with 80% of the profits being shared between two local charities, Racing Welfare and St. Nicholas Hospice, the remainder going to the artists.
At a gala evening held at The Severals sports pavilion, the horses were judged and the winning three chosen. Top prize went to Emily Jarvis for her Interpreter, in second was Frances Wray with See The Stars and third was Esther Albone with Wizard.
Competition judges were Lloyd Hughes, art teacher at Scaltback Middle School, Lorna Peck, head of art at Newmarket College and Julia George, a trainee teacher at the college.

Giantto interviewed Roman to get his perspective on how he tackles life on and off the field. When asked how he defines time, Roman replied, “Time is something you can never get back.”

Giantto asked Roman what his most memorable moment in time was and he described,

“My most memorable moment in time was winning the Superbowl in 2009. That was very special. There was maybe a minute or so left on the clock in the fourth quarter, and we stopped the Colts on fourth down. At that moment we all started celebrating on the field!”

Giantto asked Roman about his foundation, Harpers Hope 4*1, the purpose and previous projects, Roman explained,

“Its important to reach out through my foundation Harpers Hope 4*1 because it wont happen unless I make it happen. You cant just start a foundation and not put your time and efforts into it. The main purpose of Harpers Hope 4*1 is to fulfill the need to lend a helping hand to challenged youth and their families to promote better leaders of tomorrow, and the future of the nation.Some of Harpers Hope 4*1 Foundations past activities include: Christmas Toys, United Way fundraisers, football camps, PSA for United Ways Gulf Coast Recovery Fund; and Spring into Reading campaign.”

“Currently, Ive also teamed up with United Way for the Live United Campaign. Our goal is to cut the high school dropout rate in half by encouraging individuals to become volunteer readers, tutors or mentors. Ive committed to recruit 1,000 volunteers per year for the next three years. We help to rebuild homes destroyed by Katrina to put families that have been displaced back in their homes for the holidays. This year we have also teamed up with several other teammates, Malcolm Jenkins, Jahri Evans, and Lance Moore. Hope for the Holidays really means a lot to me, especially after doing it last year. Just seeing how it changes these peoples lives. Seeing the smiles on their childrens faces. The coolest part about it is the relationships you develop after doing the whole thing. It really feels like I know the families.”

Lathrup Village Officials Talk About Winning the Community Excellence Award Cup in 2009

The City of Grand Haven has won the 2010 Community Excellence Award in a statewide vote of Michigan Municipal League members. The annual statewide competition recognizes outstanding community services, projects and programs. It’s the highest award bestowed on a community by the Michigan Municipal League. Seven finalists – one from each of the League’s seven regions – were chosen as inspiring examples of what Michigan communities can accomplish through dynamic leadership, creative vision and collaborative effort. Grand Haven (http://www.grandhaven.org/news/84/198/) was selected by popular vote in the Race for the Cup competition during the League’s 112th Annual Convention Sept. 21-24 in Dearborn. Grand Haven won for its creative graphic design to communicate its annual city goals. Grand Haven’s entry, "Vivid and Lively Goals," beat out six other regional winners to claim the Michigan Municipal League’s Community Excellence Award. The city’s entry emphasized the importance of effective communication of the city council’s goals to city staff. Mary Snedeker, an administrative assistant with the city, produces a vivid image of the city’s goals, which is framed and hung in all of the city’s departments. The purpose of the initiative is to continually remind staff of the council’s direction and help measure progress toward the goals. Snedeker accepted the award along with numerous other Grand Haven officials including, Grand Haven Mayor Roger A. Bergman; Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis; and Grand Haven Mayor Pro Tem Mike Fritz. The other six statewide finalists were the lakefront city of Harbor Beach for rebranding itself with an annual Maritime Festival that draws thousands of people to Michigan’s thumb each summer; Monroe for turning an old, deserted industrial site into a new national park that now serves as a prominent city entryway; Saginaw for implementing a recycling program that dramatically reduced landfill waste in just two months; the Village of Kingsley for building a state-of-the-art .3 million library and municipal center without raising local taxes; East Lansing’s for its Technology Innovation Center that has become an incubator for technology-based businesses by offering space and resources for technology start-ups; and St. Ignace for forging a unique partnership of private, state and federal entities, to develop a new bus station for a public transit network linking the region to the entire state. The City of Grand Haven has won the 2010 Community Excellence Award in a statewide vote of Michigan Municipal League members. The annual statewide competition recognizes outstanding community services, projects and programs. It’s the highest award bestowed on a community by the Michigan Municipal League. Seven finalists – one from each of the League’s seven regions – were chosen as inspiring examples of what Michigan communities can accomplish through dynamic leadership, creative vision and collaborative effort. Grand Haven (http://www.grandhaven.org/news/84/198/) was selected by popular vote in the Race for the Cup competition during the League’s 112th Annual Convention Sept. 21-24 in Dearborn. Grand Haven won for its creative graphic design to communicate its annual city goals. Grand Haven’s entry, "Vivid and Lively Goals," beat out six other regional winners to claim the Michigan Municipal League’s Community Excellence Award. The city’s entry emphasized the importance of effective communication of the city council’s goals to city staff. Mary Snedeker, an administrative assistant with the city, produces a vivid image of the city’s goals, which is framed and hung in all of the city’s departments. The purpose of the initiative is to continually remind staff of the council’s direction and help measure progress toward the goals. Snedeker accepted the award along with numerous other Grand Haven officials including, Grand Haven Mayor Roger A. Bergman; Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis; and Grand Haven Mayor Pro Tem Mike Fritz. The other six statewide finalists were the lakefront city of Harbor Beach for rebranding itself with an annual Maritime Festival that draws thousands of people to Michigan’s thumb each summer; Monroe for turning an old, deserted industrial site into a new national park that now serves as a prominent city entryway; Saginaw for implementing a recycling program that dramatically reduced landfill waste in just two months; the Village of Kingsley for building a state-of-the-art .3 million library and municipal center without raising local taxes; East Lansing’s for its Technology Innovation Center that has become an incubator for technology-based businesses by offering space and resources for technology start-ups; and St. Ignace for forging a unique partnership of private, state and federal entities, to develop a new bus station for a public transit network linking the region to the entire state.
